Principle of operation

An Erbium doped fibre is optically pumped by a laser diode emitting at a wavelength of 980 nm. Due to the pump process a population inversion is created between two states with an energy difference corresponding to a wavelength around 1.5 μm. Signals having this wavelength will be amplified when passing the fibre. Such a signal is generated by a laser diode emitting a radiation of 1.5 μm. For combining both emissions a WDM is used.
